If someone is overweight or obese, oftentimes people jump to the conclusion of "Well that person should just exercise more" or assume they brought it upon themselves through years of neglect or irresponsibility. However this isn't always the case and there can be so many other underlying factors.
Aside from pre-disposed genetics or possible medical reasons (i.e. thyroid disfunction), things like socioeconomic status, education, culture and lack of family support can also play huge roles. The solution to obesity both in an individual and as an epidemic must take these into consideration. We need to move away from fat-shaming or stereotyping as the answer is not always as simple as "this person just needs discipline and should go to the gym more."
